Galileo is looking for a Director of Staffing who is a talent acquisition mastermind and operations expert to join our People Operations team. This warm, and experienced people manager will establish and execute hiring processes for our headquarters positions as well as thousands of seasonal jobs we fill every summer. As a key member of our People Operations team, this role will keep our hiring processes market-relevant through research and development, while inspiring and mentoring a team of recruiting specialists.

We value divergent thinkers who bring various experiences and viewpoints to the table at Galileo. We strongly encourage members of underrepresented groups and people of diverse backgrounds to apply.

Who are you?

  • You are inspired by Galileo’s mission and purpose. Innovation education, project-based learning, and working in a professional, welcoming, deeply camp-inspired environment should sound like things you’re ready to explore or sign up for.
  • You geek out on talent acquisition best practices. You have opinions about how to create inclusive, best practices for hiring and interviewing candidates. You consistently seek out and learn the latest and greatest ideas in finding great people and you believe in the potential of all people.
  • You are driven by diversity. You understand the value of diverse teams and consistently set the bar for equity and inclusion in our hiring practices.
  • You’re a detail-oriented and metrics minded strategist. You get excited about digging into Applicant Tracking System analytics to help your team make better decisions, know the importance of a well-built plan and pride yourself on delivering.
    • You’re a leader — a servant leader — at heart. You treat all who rely on your work as clients, and have a desire to support and maximize the potential of your team and colleagues, both personally and professionally.
    • You’re an adept time manager. You have a keen sense of what needs your focus, and when to switch gears from detail management to strategic vision, and you are nimble when adaptation is necessary.
  • You have an owner’s mentality. When you are responsible for something, you take it all the way. And then some.

Who are we?

At Galileo, we believe the world needs innovators and that innovation can be taught. We also think kids who learn to explore and who are willing to tackle challenges despite their fears are happier, more creative and more confident when faced with life’s challenges. And we think kids with these skills are more likely to change our world and be the masters of their own.

It takes a village to bring best-in-class educational programs to tens of thousands of kids each year online and in-person. Each of our employees takes personal responsibility for bringing our values to life and to make our company and culture better. Here, values aren’t just lip service — we aim to be visionary, courageous, collaborative, determined and reflective each day, and back that effort up with structure to ensure our success. People who joyfully work hard together, seek feedback to improve themselves, feel deeply accountable for their work, are mission driven, and play well with others tend to thrive in our culture.

We’re a certified B Corp, were recently ranked #1 on the Best Places to Work in the Bay Area (and have been on the list for twelve plus years running), have been named one of Forbes’ Best Small Companies in America, and over 97% of our summer staff say they would recommend working for us. Joining Galileo means joining an organization that is a model of innovative learning, with a company-wide commitment to Inclusion and Diversity, broadening our impact and a stellar staff experience

What’s the team like?

This position will be reporting to the Vice President of People. The People Operations team is not your average Human Resources department. You’ll be on a team that approaches everything—from the way we attract and select candidates to the quality of service and the benefits offered to our employees—in a way that reflects the pride we take in hiring and retaining exceptional staff teams.

Position Description

What’s the job, really?

We’re looking for a people-focused, process whiz dedicated to crafting and executing swift, equitable hiring processes that support Galileo’s growth and that maintain all candidates as fans. Our Director of Staffing will oversee hiring execution - from application to interview to offer - ensuring impeccable service to our candidates and hiring managers. Essential responsibilities include overseeing hiring processes for all of our applicant streams, supporting recruiting specialists in execution, and executing executive level searches.

  • You’ll oversee our Summer Camp Staff, Camp Director and Headquarters hiring. You’ll be responsible for creating plans and processes that help us vet and hire qualified candidates across the country for year-round full time and seasonal roles. You’ll also be the holder of the candidate experience.
    • You and your team will screen and hire candidates to fill 2000-3000 summer staff, 30-60 Camp Directors and several HQ positions across the Bay Area, Southern California, Chicago, Seattle and D.C. annually.
    • You’ll actively analyze data from our Applicant Tracking System (ATS) to help your team and other cross-functional teams prioritize and take actions aligned to recruiting and hiring insights.
    • You’ll be accountable to the time-to-fill and candidate and hiring manager satisfaction targets we aim to hit.

  • You’ll support executive level hiring, working with senior level hiring managers to help  diversify and expand Galileo’s leadership team.

  • You’ll lead and develop a team. You will lead and manage a team of 3 year round and 3-6 seasonal team members, leveraging high expectations and thoughtful support to push your team to greatness. You will also collaborate a lot— primarily with hiring managers you’ll support in building their teams and your peers within the People Operations function.

  • You’ll approach our hiring philosophy with a “yes, and” attitude. Always centered on the candidate experience, you’ll introduce Galileo to best practices and look to consistently level up our service to candidates and hiring managers.

What are we looking for?

  • 3+ years in a talent acquisition, recruiting, human resources or related field, especially with experience working with hiring managers and candidate rubrics and assessment philosophy.

  • 3+ years of people-oriented management experience and leadership: people want to work with you and for you.

  • Experience and a love for using data to drive strategies and plans.

  • Demonstrated experience building and scaling systems, with a lens towards creative problem solving.

  • A desire to work for a mission-driven organization.

  • The ability to collaborate closely with others and operate as both a manager and individual contributor.

  • Knowledge of applicant tracking systems such as iCIMS a plus.

  • Readiness to stick around; we've been named one of The Best Places to Work in the Bay Area for ten consecutive years, and find that our team and team members benefit from a 2-year minimum commitment.

Research shows that while men apply to jobs when they meet an average of 60% of the requirements, women and other underrepresented people tend to only apply when they match every criteria.
